Rabies is endemic (still prevalent and a major issue) in many of the world's top tourist destinations. That's not to say that travel can't be safe, quite the opposite, but it's important to be aware of how this deadly disease is having an impact around you.
Please take a moment to understand the problem, and see how you can play a vital part in eliminating the world's deadliest disease for good.
Rabies. Maybe you've heard of it?
Maybe the word conjures up images of snarling dogs, ominous bats and foaming at the mouth?
But what do you really know about rabies?
If you're travelling to a rabies area, you'll probably be told to avoid stray dogs. As 99% of all human rabies deaths are caused by an infected dog bite, it’s good advice. But there's so much more to it than that, and dogs are as much the victim as people. Understand how rabies impacts our canine friends, and together we can end this suffering.
The communities and cultures we visit and experience on our travels are, for many, the highlight of any trip. For these communities, the daily threat of rabies proves to be a massive burden. But they need not carry this burden alone – or forever. We can work with them to control the disease, and remove the need for fear.
They say information is power. Subscribe to hear from Mission Rabies, and pledge to be an informed, compassionate traveller. We'll keep you informed about how you can support the communities you're visiting with direct action as we make this the Final Rabies Generation.
